What We are Doing to be More Self Sufficient
There was a time I was part of the 47%. It was a season in my life that is part of my story, but it is a closed chapter.
Fast forward and you have a new season. A season where I am as far right as I was left. A season where I don’t want to have to depend on the government for my care or my children’s care. I want to be self sufficient.
Self Reliant
adjective
reliant on one’s own powers and resources rather than those of others.
Self Sufficient
adjective
needing no outside help in satisfying one’s basic needs, especially with regard to the production of food.
Here are a few things our family has done to achieve our goal of self sufficiency:
Get out of Debt
We went through the Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (find the book here) We are just about debt free, with the exception of our mortgage. Even our car is paid for. Such a great feeling. We don’t have people calling every month wanting our money. It frees us up to make other purchases, like essential oils or other preparedness items.
Learn Skills
I still have Ham Radio on my to learn list.
We do have many skills in our knowledge bank. Canning, sewing, hunting to name a few.
We also know some first aid, although I have a son who has EMT knowledge. The Principal was a mechanic at one time and is amazing when it comes to fixing things. Someday that could be a way to make money if it were ever needed.
Plant a Garden
Learn seed saving and the best way to plant for your zone.
Learn how to make the best dirt mix and how to compost.
Grow your food then learn how to preserve it, whether canning or dehydrating.
Essential Oils
I added essential oils to my list in January of this year and am so glad I did.
We are healthier as a result and are able to deal with small emergencies with the oils, thus eliminating visits to the doctor and saving money in the long run.
They are great as antibiotics and antivirals.
Wood Stove
We can cook and stay warm not relying on electricity or the grid.
There are many sizes and styles of wood stoves. Do your research for the best size for your house.
Stay Healthy
Staying healthy is very important. Not having to be reliant on medications or doctors. I am not anti doctor, and we go if absolutely necessary, but we have taken steps to get off of prescriptions. Eating healthy is paramount to staying healthy. The phrase you are what you eat is true.
What are some steps you have taken to become more self reliant?
Have you learned any new skills or paid off debt?
