Earlier this week I wrote about There’s No Crying in Math!
Another topic that is close to my heart is college.
Does your homeschooler HAVE to go to college?
This isn’t about CAN they go. College’s love homeschoolers. Homeschoolers, for the most part, are self starters and usually more disciplined than their public school counterparts.

I went to a technical college and The Principal went to trade school. So no, neither of us went to a 4 year college.
In our case we have four children. Four distinct personalities.
I don’t feel that every child is cut out for traditional college.
In the case of our older two boys, ADD and ADHD respectively, classroom learning isn’t a good fit.
One is a wild-land firefighter and one is a NA-C.
We now have a Sophomore and an 8th grader. Neither one has shown interest in going to college. Neither one has any clue what they want to be “when they grow up.”
I am pretty sure, at this point, that they don’t want to be doctors or lawyers, so I haven’t lost a bunch of time.
That said. Am I prepping them for school after they graduate? Sure.
Will I be disappointed if they want to go? No. I will be if they feel they HAVE to get a degree to contribute to their self worth. To their identity.
There are trade schools or apprenticeships for learning. Having a degree doesn’t guarantee you a job in the field you studied anyway.

So, my point is, I don’t believe all kids are cut out for college. Homeschooled or otherwise.
Does that make them less of a person? Not.at.all!
To me, it would be worse to get to college having not wanting to go in the first place, only to not finish.

That, my friends, is a set up for failure.
