Do it Yourself Instant Oatmeal Packets

My kids love oatmeal. They don’t, however, like plain oatmeal from the red and white canister. They will sometimes eat my crockpot steel cut oats, but that is rare.

If I do splurge, and it is a splurge, they want to eat 2 or 3 packets at a time because those little pouches aren’t enough to fill them up.
So I made my own instant oatmeal packets complete with brown sugar!

Cost breakdown:

A 150 count box of sandwich bags $2
Canister of 1 minute oats $4
4 lbs of brown sugar $2.50

One canister of oats made 17 portions (a cup of oats each)

17 Sandwich bags: .02
2 tsp of brown sugar per bag: .02
1 cup of oats: .23

so approximately .26 per baggie.

A 10 pack of Quaker Oats is around $3 so .30 a packet for half the serving size.

If I wanted to cut that in half, to only a half cup serving, that would make it .13 per bag vs Quaker Oats .30 per pouch.

It took me all of 15-20 minutes to make these up.
To make it even more frugal we don’t throw the baggies away (unless they’ve had meat in them), so I will re-use them for the next batch.

Now off to Pinterest to find a cute idea for storing these in my pantry.
