Why I Won’t Buy My Essential Oils at Wal-Mart
*EDIT*
I seem to have received some backlash for this article as I am a doTERRA Wellness Advocate.
I say here that I can’t speak to any other brand. This is because I don’t have any experience using any other brand. I am wondering how this is irresponsible on my part.
I was accused of not being “Green” because of the company I choose. I can assure you that doTERRA practices sustainable harvesting and growing with their Co-Impact Sourcing.
Does the company you use give back to their community and also the world? Do they help families start their own businesses with Micro Loans?
So Yes, I do “push” doTERRA if that is the word you choose to use. I prefer share. I share these life changing oils from a company that is having a GLOBAL impact. So before you throw tomatoes at me for wanting to protect others from essential oils that have been proven to not be what the label says they are, do your research. Pick the best company for you and don’t judge me for the choice I have made. /rant
I don’t even know where to start with this article. I want it to be educational for you, not a rant post on the quality, or lack there of, about some essential oils.
I Get It!
I want you to know I get it. I totally understand WHY you would want to get essential oils at Walmart or the health food store. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want 2 different oils AND a diffuser for $20.
Not all oils are created equal.
Why you ask? Well, I am going to tell you.
There really isn’t a standard for essential oils. This goes for ALL essential oil companies, not just the share from home or the ones you find at a health food store. The labels on the Walmart oils say 100% pure. The tests done on them prove otherwise.
They’re cheaper than those other companies, so why not?
I know you probably want to get into oils and think that this kit is a good way to do it. These may be ok for aromatic use. I wouldn’t let them touch my skin and definitely never put that peppermint in my water.
You may be asking why? Well. I will tell you why. Dr. Robert Pappas tested the peppermint and the lavender that comes in this ‘kit.’
The “peppermint” (results here) is Cornmint oil (Mentha arvensis) and not Peppermint (Mentha piperita). The lavender? Not so much. You kind find the results also on his Facebook page.
It takes over 30 pounds of Lavender to get a 5ml bottle of oil. Do you think a quality oil is going to cost $5-10?
When a bottle of Lavender runs around $21 (my cost) and it has 250 drops that is about .08 per drop and you only need 1-2 drops per use. Tell me again how oils are expensive.
I get it, I really do. It’s like buying the name brand vs store brand to save money. Except we aren’t talking aspirin or heat packs. We are talking about synthetics and fillers in oils you want to use on your family.
Please don’t even go buy it to get the diffuser. It is only encouraging Walmart to #1 stock the oils and #2 sell inferior products.
(This is one of my favorite diffusers)
Who is the Pappas guy?
I understand you could argue that this Dr. Pappas guy did the tests and that doesn’t prove anything. You’re right, except he is highly regarded in the essential oil community, and not just with the two big network marketing companies.
He is an independent scientist who tests the oils himself.

Thank you.
My site is MydoTERRA.com/teamkautz I would love help you become empowered with essential oils!
Are there any local stores that you know of that could have them if we were to need them in an emergency?? I have seen them at Jewel but I forgot the brand and almost bought them but was very skeptical.
I can only recommend doTERRA because it is the only brand I know. Email TeamKautzOils@gmail.com and I can answer your questions!
Thanks for commenting!
lol this is such a biased article from someone who gets commission pushing doTERRA oils.
I am merely saying don’t buy Wal Mart with scientific back up. If you can find research on doTERRA that proves the same then I wouldn’t buy theirs either.

7 of 9 EO’s of this brand at Walmart are 100% pure. You can research the company if you’d like. They are legit.
I agree, Cwilliams. Unable to answer any questions about essential oils that are *not* doTERRA. So dishonest. How can you be “green” and not have a problem with consumerism and being a human infomercial? There are plenty of local small businesses who have good essential oils, that commented came to you for legitimate info.
I have only ever used doTERRA. I don’t have knowledge of other brands or how a person may respond to other brands. Seem responsible to me. I can assure you that doTERRA practices sustainable farming when sourcing their oils. As for small business, this blog and my oils are my small business, whether you agree with my way of supporting my family isn’t my problem.
I agree with NOT buying your oils from Walmart. But I also don’t buy young living or do terra. I purchase from a local shop in my home town called good fortune soap. She’s correct in the oils aren’t pure. I’ve read lots of reports, unfortunately this one became void due to her trying to push her product. When I took an oils class they explained a lot of differences in pure oils and not and trust me when you use a pure oil you start to notice the difference!!! I suggest you find a local shop, farmers market, etc to take a class or just learn the fundamentals of oils and buying local might be a tad more than Walmart but my local shop is only a few dollars more and the quality is so superior and they offer a 10% discount when you reuse your bottle.
Hmmm Don’t recall pushing anything. You are more than welcome to purchase your oils where ever you like. For me it comes down to the source and sustainability of the oils. The relationship with the growers and the farmers. When you go to Wal Mart or the corner health food store you have none of that. To each their own.
Great article! I personally prefer Young Living but I support anyone who wants to use EO in their lives. I always recommend doing research before you buy. It’s the only way to know what works well for your family.
I love my kit , I put it together with a tsp of love ,a tablespoon of mother earth, & whole lot of sunshine & moonlight , I created it for me & me alone & it serves me well
Look into Plant Therapy essential oils. They are transparent with their ingredients and list everything on their site. Much more cost effective option for those getting started. I have been doing my homework with all the various brands. Plant Therapy isn’t as much a MLM as doTERRA and Young Living.
